Shree Swasthani Vrata is a rigorous fasting festival observed by Nepali women. This sacred observance lasts for one month, from the full moon day of the bright fortnight of Poush to the full moon day of the bright fortnight of Magh. During this period, devotees worship Lord Shiva.
According to belief, in the Satya Yuga, Goddess Parvati, the daughter of the Himalayas, observed the Shree Swasthani Vrata on the advice of Lord Vishnu to attain Lord Mahadev as her husband. As her wish was fulfilled, the tradition of reciting the Shree Swasthani Vrata Katha and performing the Magh Snan (holy bath in the month of Magh) came into practice.
This fast is observed primarily by women, and it is believed that observing it brings happiness, peace, and prosperity, as described in the Vrata Katha, and also helps eliminate illnesses and sufferings. Since ancient religious scriptures mention that the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati took place due to the influence of this vrata, the Swasthani Vrata Katha has been traditionally practiced and passed down through generations.
